Heavyweight Passenger Cars
Pennsylvania
|
| |
In the early part of the 20th century, the Pennsylvania Railroad was riding high and this prosperity was reflected in its passenger cars. They were adorned in the now standard tuscan red with gold leaf lettering, 4 pairs of black and gold stripes, metallic brown roofs and olive green underbody and trucks. But even the mighty Pennsy could not escape the effects of the Great Depression. In a transformation most severe, the olive and brown were replaced with black and the striping was eliminated. Between 1938 and 1946, some cars wore the elaborate Fleet of Modernism livery, but all were returned to solid tuscan. |

Three yellow stripes were added in 1948, one above the windows and two below. This would be Pennsy's standard paint scheme for 15 years, worn by almost all passenger-carrying equipment with the notable exception of the Congressional/Senator cars delivered by Budd 1952. Another paint scheme arrived in 1963 when the "Pennsylvania" on the letterboards was replaced by a keystone placed at window height towards each end. This livery lasted until the 1968 Penn Central merger. |
