Smooth Side Passenger Cars Lehigh Valley - John Wilkes   After his success with restyling their Asa Packer earlier in 1939, the Lehigh Valley called upon industrial designer Otto Kuhler to repeat this success with their Wilkes-Barre Express. His new design of black and red with white striping was even better. The new train consisted of a streamlined 4-6-2 Pacific and a combination of new smoothside and reconditioned heavyweight cars. Now called the John Wilkes, it went into service on June 4th, 1939.     This new paint scheme soon replaced the orange and black of the Asa Packer and was applied to the LV's flagship train Black Diamond in 1940. The LV began replacing their steam locomotives with deisels in 1948 and, at the same time, repainted their passenger cars in solid Cornell red.
